x86-64 (also known as x64, x86_64, AMD64, and Intel 64) is a 64-bit version of the x86 instruction set, first released in 1999. It introduced two new modes of operation, 64-bit mode and compatibility mode, along with a new 4-level paging mode. The x86 Assembly Language Reference Manual documents the syntax of the SolarisTM x86 assembly language. Note - In this document the term "x86" refers to 64-bit and 32-bit systems manufactured using processors compatible with the AMD64 or Intel Xeon/Pentium product families. This article describes how x86 and x86-64 instructions are encoded. An x86-64 instruction may be at most 15 bytes in length. It consists of the following components in the given order, where the prefixes are at the least-significant (lowest) address in memory: Legacy prefixes (1-4 bytes, optional).
